“SHOULD I GET BANGS?” Things to consider before making the final cut

Picture this: You’ve had the same hairstyle for a while, you’re bored. You just had a breakup and are in dire need of a fresh look. You saw your fav celeb rocking new fringe. You ask yourself, should I get bangs? The answer could be yes, but impulsivity that comes with bangs is something to be weary about. I am queen of hair changes, and bangs are my constant back and forth. If you relate, keep reading for some info that may help you make the decision!

My vicious bangs cycle goes as so: Cut them, love them, sick of them, pin them, grow them, cut them. You get it. I’m here to share with you from experience, a few things to consider before committing to the cut!

FACESHAPE: First things first, before choosing a style of bang it’s important to pick what looks best on your features. The basic rule of thumb for finding a great bang for your face shape is to choose a style that highlights your best features and creates the illusion of a perfectly oval face. I won’t break down all the options, because there are so many! I do recommend searching on Pinterest for photos of women that have similar features to yours. You can of course always ask your stylist what shape she considers you and if she/he have an idea of what would look best. Face shapes including round, heart, square and oval. For whichever face shape you have, you’ll want to pick a bang that flatters your best facial assets. You can always ask your stylist what they would suggest. Here’s some extra things to keep in mind before making the plunge!

LIFESTYLE: You’ll want to choose a bang that suits your lifestyle. I, personally, don’t like to have bangs when I workout. I find that a longer bang works best for me since I can pin them up easy during my sweat sessions.

STYLING: Having the time to train/style your bangs is key. Bangs are not for the “wash&go” kind of gal…unless of course you have extremely strait/fine hair and they magically stay well for you upon waking up. If you’re not a unicorn, however, you’ll have to style them each morning like the rest of us.

PRODUCTS: If you do embark on the journey of getting bangs, I’d like to share a little tip I learned last time I had them. At the time, I was using a lot of wonderful serums on my face. I was noticing that my bangs seemed to get extra greasy by the middle of the day.

PRO tip: skip the serums on your forehead in the morning at least- they make your bangs appear wet and greasy. Not cute, right? If it does happen, dry shampoo works like a charm.

PRO TRICK: I, personally do not wash my hair every day. It is good to wait for the natural oils to build up just a little in between. The best advice I got from a fellow hairstylist was to wash only your bangs. I don’t know why I never thought of this simple tip, it’s so smart. In the shower, while washing my face, I would bend my bangs into the water with a little shampoo. Literal game changer, especially after a work out. Then, your bangs are wet and ready to get re-styled for work or whatever.

MAINTENANCE: How often you will need to get trims is very dependent on each person’s individual hair growth. It is also dependent on the style and length of the fringe.

Luckily, keeping up with bang trims is not costly.

I charge only $10 for a bang trim and some stylists do complimentary bang trims in between haircut appointments. As a general rule of thumb, I usually suggest 3 weeks as a starting point for standard strait across cuts. Longer bangs like side or curtain I start my guests at 4 1/2-5 weeks, sometimes a bit sooner depending on their hair texture. Some people with very bulky textures may need to hop in the salon sooner due to heaviness, in which case I take out my ol’ trusty texture shears and shape those babies right up.

PLUS: Bangs are especially great for the gal who wears her hair up a lot and struggles to feel stylish.

I actually found that I wore my hair up a lot when I had them. Because of the bangs, I had a stylist look and could still rock a messy bun. Best of both worlds, right? My number one hair tip is this- HAVE FUN. Change it up. It’s hair, it’ll grow.
