Trend alert: the 90’s are back
Totally biased opinion here, but I love the 90’s. I was born on the cusp of them, in ’89… so I am a product of many hours of some serious full house re-runs. 90’s fashion has been back for several several months, I would say heavily that they came back last year, early 2019… however, it seems like it’s hitting the hair and makeup aesthetics HARD lately. And it’s not just clothing… it’s ALL things 90’s… retro video games (I can’t believe 90’s is considered retro - but ok), television shows, movies, chunky highlights, 90s nostalgia is at an all time high right now. Anyone who has been on social media in the past couple months can clearly see that it’s coming in HOT. The 90s wasn’t just defined by dial up internet and political sex scandals, this decade brought with the rise of boy and girl bands leading to lifelong crushes. I mean… it definitely is a “thing” wheather you were/are a N*SYNC fan VS. a Backstreet Boys fan. Then, there was O-Town & 98degrees. I mean, there were many more boy and girl bands, but these were my top jams. And, just to clarify: I am forever and ever an N*SYNC & O-town girl. V. Important detail I needed to add. Gosh, I wish I could find the pics of my long time friend and I from 5th grade camp where we taped pictures of boy bands all over the walls near our bunk beds. Classic.
Okay back to the trends…Clearly my thoughts of “Omg I hope these hairstyles never come back” while watching friends re-runs for the 500th time did not do a single thing.
Just to get in the right headspace to create this, I’m currently listening to a youtube mix of N*SYNC’s greatest hits (I mean, they ALL were hits… & I stand by that statement).
I am remembering the days of standing in line outside of Sam Goody hours on end with my cousins waiting for the newest N*SYNC CD to come out. I mean, just give me some butterfly clips and I’m all set. And for you who are too young to know what that store Sam Goody is… UGH… I’m going to go put on some wrinkle cream RN. Anyways, let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? You may think… What does this mean for the beauty industry? Well, I’ll show you. I’ve gathered some of my favorite 90’s trends that I am seeing around IG & Pinterest. All credit to these photos & the artists behind them are labeled by the photo. You may love it or hate it, but these trends are just beginning.
Pics straight from the 90’s:
Some of my favorite stylists re-creating 90’s greatest looks:
Kali is an amazing stylist and owner of Studio Port. She is from Canada that I have been following her for a long time. She is a total babe and trend setter, always so humble and sweet when we message. She is queen of copper and inspires the heck out of me all the time! I love Kali’s chunky front accent piece in this first photo and her use of accessories in the next! She is one of the first from my hair IG feed that I saw with this style. These pics are sooo 90’s vibes in her own amazing way- and i’m here for it!
Images above are all of the amazing Maggie . She is basically a celeb in the hair world and honestly she is QUEEN of bringing back these trends. She is bold and sassy and also a total babe! Between her and her fiancé (@bescene), they are bringing some serious inspo to these bold trends. Maggie is also offering the only 90’s hair classes I’ve seen on the market right now in the hair world. She is on the Schwarzkopf artistic team, 3 time BTC one shot winner, Behind the chair team member, Owner of Moxie salon in Scottsdale, AZ. She is awesome.
Thanks for the inspo, Maggie!
Okay, talk about hair crush… I have been following Kelly since before I even started doing hair. She has forever been my vintage styling and rainbow hair inspo. I am obsessed with the hair and these images by her above. If i’m being honest, she is basically a hair God to me. She is a Canadian stylist, Mama, Owner of the Sapphire Hair Lounge & also an international educator for Pulp Riot. What doesn't she do?! The way she uses vivid hair colors and fun accessories to being a 90’s style here is sooo rad to me. HERE. FOR. IT.
She is queen of Vivids & Vintage style pairing.
Follow her, you will never not be entertained with her IG stories and astounded by her talent, education and creativity!
This is Jess. Jess is QUEEN of style and creativity with photos, hair & clothing. She is also a Cali hairstylist and totally my soul sister. When I reached out to her asking if I could use some of her images to feature here, she seriously took time to take a pic with butterfly clips in her hair specifically for me! Like?! What a sweet angel, am I right? Total 90’s inspo, and I was also astounded at how many accessories she had on hand. So fun! Her page makes me smile because it’s totally colorful and creative and happy.
Thank you sweet Jess for inspiring me!
I’d like to add here that every single stylist on here that I reached out to, asking to share their images on my blog… ALL said yes and replied to me in the same day. I was so happy by the humble response even though some of these ladies have a very large following and I can only imagine how many messages they all get each day. Thank you all for replying to me and wanting to participate! I appreciate you all.
ABOVE: Some major 90’s nostalgia & memorabilia to wrap up this "vintage” throwback blog. We are going to continue seeing amazing versions of these trends throughout the beauty world this year. I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait to see more decades come back. It’s so fun! And, this just goes to show you… EVERYTHING comes back around. When I get back into the salon I am going to be on pins and needles waiting to see what starts getting requested! Are you bold enough to brave the bold accent piece? Will you find an outfit to go with some large clips in your hair? I can’t wait to see what this inspires!
Happy trend-setting, babes!
