Your hair knows what you did last summer

SUMMER…

A season of adventure, relaxation, and vibe that screams care-free.

A season also full of sun, saltwater, chlorine, heat, and travel.

Have you gotten to the end of summer and thought, “What on earth has happened to my hair?!”

Despite taking good care of my hair, it’s still needs a little TLC by the end of the summer.

Cooler weather should mean new beginnings to your hair care routine.

Getting your hair winter-ready is all about switching up the products you don’t need for the new season.

I’m here to share a little about what summer can do to our hair, what preventative measures we can take next season, and all about repairing it for Winter.

BLAME IT ALL ON THE ELEMENTS:

SUN- Although it feels warm and friendly, it can wreak havoc on our manes.

Yes, we need the Vitamin D & it feels so welcoming on a summer’s day, but if we’re not protecting our hair, we’ll pay for it come fall.

Did you know that sunlight can actually degrade your hair’s proteins and pigment?

We obviously don’t want weak or dull hair, so this science is a real bummer.

The sun also takes moisture away from our hair, sometimes leaving it drier, frizzy and rough in texture.

So, what can we do?

[Here’s a…]

PREVENTION PLAN:

Just like our skin needs sunscreen to protect it, our hair needs UV protection against those harmful rays. It’s not just hot tools we need to watch out for.

Having a heat protectant built into your hair care is a major plus!

The easiest way is, of course, cover your hair with a hat or scarf.

For all my blondies out there struggling with the green-ish hue after swimming, here’s a tip for you!

Get your hair wet before swimming. What this does is the water fills the micro-porous holes in our hair and it gives less of a chance for the chlorine to grab hold. You can also add an extra boost and put some conditioner in your hair prior to jumping in! The water or conditioner fills the microscopic holes and let’s chlorine know it isn’t welcome. Pretty sweet, right? You can also spray or rub some conditioner onto your locks for some extra fillers.

REPAIR TIME:

So, say we didn’t do any of these things and It’s the end of summer and you didn’t know about hair UV protection, or maybe you’re not a “hat person”.

We’re here, what’s done is done.

I’m not judging. In fact, I’ve been guilty myself of not properly protecting my hair.

So, let’s trouble shoot, K?

Before you do anything, have your stylist do a fresh split end trim. Even if you don’t want to take any length off, they can do what I call a “dusting”.

A dusting takes off all the little frayed hairs you see on top of your hair strand. Split ends aren’t always just on the ends… they can be through the mid strands as well. Wearing your hair up in the same spot on your head can also be the cause of these splits. Trimming them off will prevent those broken micro-hairs from breaking even more.

In other news, Deep conditioner is your new best friend.

Like, twice a week you need to hangout. Put it on while your vacuuming the house, while you are shaving your legs, whatever. Leave it on for 10 minutes or longer, depending on what kind you have.

MASK PRO TIP: Make sure to ring out your hair the best you can before applying. This helps make sure the water doesn’t block the holes in your hair. We need those open so we can fill them with conditioner.

If you have a shower cap at home, or even some plastic wrap, put that on while you have your mask on! What this does is trap the heat that comes off your head into the cap. The heat opens up our hair cuticles (just like it does to our pores) and allows that mask to get in deep.

Alright guys, one last tip!

Even if you don’t want to change your hair color for fall, have your stylist do a clear gloss treatment. This will make your hair shiny and reflective!

This gives the effect of a smoothing hair color, without changing your shade! It coats your hair the same as color would, and usually only deposits into the hair which is less damaging.

Are you ready to rock fall hair?! I say, “See ya, summer!”… We’ll be more prepared next year!
